Where: Along Route 9, halfway between Jose Ignacio and Garzon, Uruguay

What: On the road to Garzon, Uruguay. Twenty miles inland from trendy beach town Jose Ignacio and #21 on the New York Times’ list of 52 Places To Go in 2016. The reason we went? To enjoy a very special dinner in the candlelit garden at Garzon’s eponymous restaurant, helmed by Argentine celeb chef and grillmaster Francis Mallmann.

On the Itinerary:
♦ A visit to Bodega Garzon, a boutique vineyard with a winery and restaurant (an inn opens next year)
♦ Plenty of beach time in nearby Jose Ignacio, with long lunches at La Huella
♦ A stop at the unique Casapueblo, a museum, art gallery, café and design hotel built by Uruguayan artist Carlos Páez Vilaró

Properties we Love:
Garzon Hotel & Restaurante — Mallmann’s small, romantic inn
Bahia Vik –stylish beach retreat with a focus on art, architecture and design
Posada del Faro — whitewashed beachfront hotel that’s laid back and chic, with complimentary golf carts available to guests for zipping around town
